Ooma works in India

I purchased a Ooma from Amazon, and set it up in India. It worked fine! Hooray, for inexpensive unlimited calling!

Steps to perform -
1. Buy your Ooma device here
2. Activate it while you are in USA, and test it out to make sure Ooma is working fine
3. Take/ship your device to India
4. Purchase a 220v adapter with same specification as your Ooma adapter. Your Ooma adapter runs on 110v and will not work in India
5. Simply connect Ooma to the Internet and enjoy unlimited calling!

Ooma personal block!

So, now, Ooma gives me the choice of blocking calls from numbers that I no longer wish to take calls from!!

I can simply go in to my lounge, and create a black-list.

I can now use the community black-list (block calls from the sames numbers that everyone else has also blocked as spam)
Or, i could create my own list of numbers that I do not want to hear from anymore (old girlfriends, my ex-employer, my crediters ;O)

If you haven't got the Ooma yet, one more reason to get it now.

A year of hasslefree savings!

A year of service completed with Ooma completed! I was one of the early purchasers who got it for ~$400. But no regrets! One year through the service I've hit even with a connection with a long distance phone service.

I would buy it from Amazon (click here), where you'd get great service and good discount over the real Ooma website.

Ooma working

It works. And it works just fine.

- I thought that the Ooma dial tone was cute. Its different and I'm proud of it
- The service had quite a few breakages when I was running it on Comcast internet (dunno why), but when i moved to AT&T internet it just worked perfectly
- Catch for Beta users - if your home phone does not have caller ID, Ooma can't provide the feature either

Overall the service was great. Works like a charm :-)

Just a reminder, expect all calls within US to be free. All international calls will be at par with any other VOIP provider like Skype, Vonage etc.

You need the $399 :-)

You need a phone receiver.

You need a broadband internet connection. Its not exactly clear what the minimum internet speed requirements are. But going by the industry standard, a DSL 512kbps line should be good enough

Optionally a landline connection from your big old (crappy) telephone company (that still works) if you are comfortable with e911.

The installation is fairly simple.

No, a Ooma killer is not on cards yet. But the struggling company Vonage has decided to glamorize the world of routers. Their new device called the VDV21, current in beta testing, is one router you won't need to hide under your desk. The device also includes a LCD display that can be used to troubleshoot service and receive messages from Vonage support.

Word is out that while Ooma is available for $400 per box when it is officially launched in September this year, it will cost about $600 next year.

I got a special pre-order offer from Ooma. Darn, I wanted the White Rabbit Offer! Oh well. I'm gonna wait and watch until 31st Dec if the service is worth it!

With $27MM in funding and Ashton Kutcher in the gang, how can they go wrong some tell me. Yeah. Ok.

Q. Why do i need the internet to make Ooma work? Can I only call other Ooma subscriber with my Ooma phone?
A. Ooma relies on local telephone systems as well as the internet to work. So, you do need the internet to make the Ooma device work. However, you can make calls to anyone in the United States - cell phones, landlines, Ooma phones etc. There is no restriction and it is free.

Q. If i buy Ooma without buying my own landline number, will Ooma still work? How will I get a landline number then?
A. Yes, you don't need to buy a landline connection before buying Ooma. You only need the Internet. You could select a landline number when you purchase the Ooma service.

Ooma's creators spent two and a half years on a product they think is significantly different from anything else out there. No doubt its the only VOIP company that offers free service for life, But in a world where a company with 200,000 customers and $80m goes down the drain within a week (a.k.a SunRocket), a lot needs to be proved in the VOIP services arena to gain the consumer's confidence.

Ooma's profits are based on their hardware margins as well as the density and size of their network of consumers. This makes an interesting combination - with higher number of subscribers the cost of the sustaining comes down exponentially.

A few question yet to be answered and to be considered before you invest in the Ooma box -
1. How long with the Ooma box last? Will it be replaced with a new one for free if t stops working after 2 years?
2. Is Ooma safe from IP patent infringements?
3. Can I transfer my Ooma service to someone else easily?

Ooma makes the news of the day. The secret of the White Rabbit is out.

While other VOIP providers like SunRocket (which just died) and Vonage are stuggling to find their feet, it wasn't very intuitive of the VOIP genius Andrew Frame to put in 27 mmmmillion dollars into another one of those pay-once-always-free firms.

Ooma differentiates itself from other monthly-payment VOIP providers by charging a one time only fee of $399 for the Ooma box. Once installed you have lifetime free local and long distance calling in the US. Calls to outside of US would still be charged at the same rate as any other VOIP service, in pennies.

Life time free?! No, I'm not kidding! Ooma does this by using the existing PSTN infrastructure in addition to VOIP telephony over internet. The exact details are yet to be seen, but it is exciting.

Is the white rabbit here to stay? Lets wait for the numbers. They've begun their marketing using the Joost strategy, giving out the Ooma boxes by invitation only. And they have a reason for doing that - they want to control the zip codes that get the first few set of boxes as that will determine the reach of the service.
